Dubai: The Most Convenient City in the World?
13 Things You Miss When Travelling

Dubai is known for its modern, digital-first lifestyle, but in a city full of architectural marvels and record-breaking attractions, one thing often gets taken for granted: the convenience.

It has become so deeply ingrained in daily life that while we appreciate it, we rarely stop to realise how rare it actually is in other parts of the world. It is only when we travel that it suddenly becomes obvious just how much Dubai does to make everyday living effortless.

We love travelling, but after more than two weeks outside the UAE, the homesick feeling starts to kick in and we realise just how much the UAE spoils its residents by taking care of almost everything.

Here are 13 things we miss most about Dubai whenever we travel abroad.

1. Almost Everything Is Open Late

Need groceries at midnight? No problem. Craving a shawarma at 2 AM? Sure. Need medicines? They’re delivered almost immediately.

You can step out at almost any hour and still find life happening normally around you, not just in tourist hotspots. In many countries, supermarkets close by 8 PM, pharmacies have limited hours, and cafés shut early, making anything late-night a challenge.

We often get culture shocks when travelling, eg: when we were told that cafés closed at 5 PM in places such as Ireland or when we cant find shops open till 10am. In Dubai, 24/7 convenience is simply part of daily life.

2. You Can Find Almost Any Cuisine Imaginable

One evening you can enjoy authentic Lebanese food. The next day you can eat Korean, Italian, Japanese, Indian, Mexican, Turkish, or even Uzbeki cuisine.
Dubai’s international population has created one of the world’s most diverse food scenes. Many cities have excellent restaurants, but few offer the sheer variety available within a short drive.

3. Food Delivery Is on Another Level

Not only can you have almost any cuisine, you can also order it at any time and have it delivered straight to your doorstep. The only real ‘problem’ is the sheer number of apps you can use.

Plus most nearby restaurants offer free delivery, and delivery apps are constantly running discounts, making it even easier to order. The speed, availability, and variety in Dubai are difficult to match anywhere else.

4. Everything Happens Online

Dubai has embraced digital convenience.
Pay bills, order food, book appointments, top up your phone, renew services, arrange transport, and manage countless daily tasks directly from your smartphone. Everything from taxis to small shops use card, Apple Pay, or app-based payment methods.

Many countries still rely heavily on cash payments, physical visits, or lengthy processes. Travelling to even other developed countries can feel like stepping backwards in time after living in UAE.

5. Everything Has an App and Can Be Delivered in Minutes

Need a charger, batteries, pet food, a new kettle or a new phone? Services like Amazon and Noon deliver essentials within 15 minutes. It’s not only product deliveries.

There’s an app for every service possible. Home services like cleaning, handyman bookings, manicures, and massages can all be booked online and delivered to your home.

You can even get fuel delivered through apps like CAFU, or book a personal chauffeur through apps like Zofeur who arrives at your location and drives you in your own car. It works as a safe driver service or for errands like car handovers and maintenance.

Even local stores are just as fast. Sometimes when we walk into a grocery in our building to buy something even as simple as a laban up, they’ll ask us why we took the trouble to come instead of just WhatsApping them. Pharmacy delivery is the same. With our pharmacy next door it genuinely feels like medicines arrive before we’ve even finished the phone call.

It’s one of those conveniences you only realise after travelling, when you just need a painkiller but there’s nothing on google maps for miles.

6. Customer Service Is Fast

Need something fixed? A delivery rescheduled? A quick answer?
In Dubai, businesses respond quickly because competition is intense and expectations are high.
When we travelled to Georgia, one thing that stood out was how slow food delivery felt. We often waited an hour for simple orders like khachapuri. It is normal when food is freshly baked, but it still felt like an ‘inconvenience’ after Dubai. Service standards vary worldwide, but Dubai sets a very different expectation.

7.  Safety Creates Freedom

One of the biggest conveniences in Dubai isn’t an app or a delivery service.

It’s peace of mind. Residents (including women) feel comfortable walking late at night, using public spaces after dark, or leaving belongings unattended. Dubai Police is phenomenal at enforcing safety. You’ll be surprised how many people leave their doors unlocked. There have been multiple incidents where you’ll get even large sums of lost cash or jewellery returned

You only realise how valuable that feeling is when visiting destinations where you constantly need to be more cautious. Like Paris or London where you are constantly worried about pickpocketting and cant even hold your phone out in peace.

8. The City Is Exceptionally Clean

Roads, parks, beaches, shopping centres, and public spaces are maintained to a remarkably high standard. There are trash cans everywhere.

It’s one of those things residents stop noticing until they visit countries where cleanliness isn’t prioritised in the same way.

9. Public Toilets Are Everywhere

You can find a clean public toilet almost anywhere, including starting points of some hikes in other emirates.

And the shattaf/the handheld toilet sprayer is the most convenient feature that feels impossible to live without once you are used to it. Travelling to any place without it feels primitive.

10. The UAE Always Feels One Step Ahead

The UAE often feels like it is already working on tomorrow’s problems. No city is perfect. But Dubai is self aware. They are constantly working on things to make it a better place.

Roads are widened. Metro lines expand. New communities gain parks and facilities. Government services become faster and more digital every year.

11. Travelling Through Dubai Is Effortless

Living in Dubai means access to one of the world’s best-connected airports with direct flights to most countries. One of our favourite things about returning home is the iris scan, as it perfectly sets the tone for life in the UAE. For residents, immigration can take just seconds with a simple iris scan and no lengthy queues.

It’s a level of travel convenience you only truly appreciate after queuing at airports elsewhere.

12. Everything Is Designed to Make Life Easier

Dubai’s infrastructure has been designed with convenience in mind. Wide roads, modern shopping centres, organised services, air-conditioned bus stops and public spaces make everyday life remarkably easy.

Need groceries, a pharmacy, a bank, a salon, and somewhere to eat? Dubai’s malls bring everything together under one roof. Even supermarkets stock products from all over the world, making it easy to find exactly what you need.

You don’t notice it while living here, but after navigating ageing infrastructure, extreme weather, or running errands across multiple locations abroad, Dubai’s efficiency becomes very obvious.

13. Convenience Is Built on Hard Work

It’s important to recognise that Dubai’s convenience didn’t happen overnight. Behind every delivery, restaurant, taxi, hotel, and service is a workforce that keeps the city running 24/7. The convenience residents enjoy is made possible by the leadership and the millions of people working across countless industries.

Dubai’s efficiency is not just technology or infrastructure. It is people.

Final Thoughts

Dubai sets an incredibly high standard for convenience.

From safety and seamless digital services to late-night groceries, rapid deliveries, and efficient infrastructure, many of the things residents consider normal are anything but normal elsewhere.

The biggest luxury in Dubai isn’t the skyscrapers or shopping malls. It’s the convenience.
